Principles of Effective Logo Design

Making your logo as simple is possible allows it to be easily recognised, versatile and memorable.Think of brands that you like that are instantly recognisable such as the BMW roundel or the Nike tick.

Memorable

An effective logo design should be memorable, which you can achieve by keeping it simple yet appropriate.

Timeless

The best logos have longevity and should stand the test of time. Will your logo still work in 5 or 10-years?

Versatile

Your logo should work across a number of formats and be scalable. Consider how it will work in the following applications:
• In one colour?
• Reversed out (i.e. a light logo on a dark background)?
• At different sizes, i.e. as a social media graphic or on a banner stand?

Another thing to consider are the printing costs: the more colours you use, the more expensive it will be for your business over the long term. Avoid using special colours such as silver and gold which will not translate well online and will cost you extra to print.

Appropriate

Consider your audience, is your logo appropriate for who you are targeting and what you are selling?. For example, using a bright colour scheme and handwritten font might work for selling craft products but would not work for an accountancy business or legal firm.

To summarise:

Good logo designs are not complicated. Keep your design simple and follow these principles to ensure that your logo truly represents your brand.
